GCSE Equivalence Tests

The GCSE equivalence tests offered by Educate Teacher Training provide a flexible way for you to demonstrate the standards required in English, maths and science to begin an initial teacher training programme.

The tests are designed and marked by experienced examiners to confirm equivalence to GCSE Grade 4/C.

The cost of each test sat at the Grantham centre is £144 (including VAT).  The cost of each test sat at an approved local setting is £154 (including VAT).  Fees are payable, in full, upon booking.

Please get in touch for information on how to book a test.  If you are sitting your test at a local setting, Educate Teacher Training will need to approve an invigilator.

Please note: while the majority of institutions and organisations will consider a Grade 4/C or higher pass in an equivalence test as being equivalent to a Grade 4/C or higher GCSE award, they are under no obligation to do so.  We strongly recommend that you check that the organisation you are applying to will accept the GCSE equivalence award from Educate Teacher Training.

Frequently asked Questions

What is a DBS Certificate?

A DBS certificate is a document containing information held by the police and government departments and is used by employers and voluntary organisations to make safer recruitment decisions.

Who needs a DBS Certificate?

You must have a valid reason to be checked, for example, you work with children or vulnerable adults, you work with confidential information or it is a contractual requirement.

If you are still unsure you need a DBS check, please use this link to view a list of all eligible posts: DBS Eligible Posts

Are there different types of certificate?

Yes, there are two types:

  • Standard DBS Certificate
  • Enhanced DBS Certificate

Anyone who has regular contact with children and/or vulnerable adults in their working or volunteer environment must have an Enhanced DBS Certificate.

How much does Educate Teacher Training charge for a DBS Certificate?

Standard DBS

Enhanced DBS

Volunteer (Standard or Enhanced)

DBS Statutory Fee

Admin Fee

The total costs are inclusive of VAT, no hidden extras to pay.

*In addition to the above, there is a DBS Adult First check that can be done for those wanting to work with vulnerable adults only. The DBS Adult First check searches the Department of Health’s list of people who it bars from working with vulnerable adults. Organisations employing people in posts that involve working with vulnerable adults will be able to request a check of the Vulnerable Adult’s Barred List but it can be applied for only if an application for an Enhanced certificate is also submitted. There is an additional DBS statutory fee of £6.00 for this service, making a total of £67.00 for the two checks.

The advantage of this additional check is that, if the applicant is not on the list, he or she can start work, with strict supervision, prior to the DBS Certificate being issued.

Payment for any check undertaken by Educate Teacher Training is required in full upon receipt of the relevant application form and may be by cheque, payable to Educate Teacher Training, or by BACS – details on request.

How do I apply for a DBS Certificate?

For anyone wishing to use our services as an Umbrella Body, please contact Jane Frugtneit or Sue Taylor on 01476  512 780 or e-mail dbs@educate.co.uk.

Visit the DBS website for general information relating to DBS Certificates.

 DBS Update Service

Introduced in 2014, the Update Service lets applicants keep their DBS certificates up to date and allows employers to check a certificate online. An applicant will not need to apply for multiple checks for the same workforce and where the same level and type of check is required, saving time and money.

It is up to the individual applicant to join and can be applied for online only – Update Service.

When a certificate is known to be issued, Educate Teacher Training provides guidance of the Update Service to all applicants.
